Chapter 11 – The Video
Two days later, Marta sent Sophie the photographs.
There were beautiful ones.
Sophie arriving.
Daniel smiling.
The ring box opening.
Then the confrontation.
Marta had lowered the camera during most of it.
But another beachgoer had recorded part of the argument on a phone.
The clip began seconds before Claudia kicked the sign.
It showed Daniel shouting.
It showed Claudia arguing.
It showed the kick.
Then Daniel stepping toward her while Sophie grabbed his arm.
Online, people immediately split.
Some said Claudia had deliberately ruined a private moment that harmed nobody.
Others focused on Daniel screaming at an older woman.
Some said public proposals were inherently selfish because they turned shared places into personal stages.
Others asked why Claudia had not simply walked twenty metres away.
One comment read:
If a stranger can destroy your proposal by standing nearby, don’t propose in public.
Another replied:
Standing nearby wasn’t the problem. Kicking their sign was.
Then someone wrote:
Everyone here behaved badly except the woman being proposed to.
Sophie stared at that comment longer than the others.
Daniel noticed.
“You agree?”
“I don’t know.”
He looked hurt.
She immediately said:
“Daniel.”
“No, it’s okay.”
“It’s not that.”
“You think I went too far.”
“I think you got angry.”
“Of course I got angry.”
“I know.”
“So?”
She looked at him.
“So nothing.”
But something had changed.
Not in whether she loved him.
In the memory.
Their proposal was no longer theirs.
It had become an argument strangers could replay and judge.
