Her Sister Sold Their Late Mother’s House Without Telling Her—Then the New Owner Found Something in the Attic
Emily Carter knew something was wrong the moment her key stopped working.
She stood on the front porch of the small Ohio house where she and her sister had grown up and tried the lock again.
Nothing.
She pulled the key out, checked it, and tried once more.
Still nothing.
There was a different doormat in front of the door.
The old brass porch light had been replaced.
And the faded ceramic planter their mother had kept beside the steps for almost twenty years was gone.
Emily stepped backward and stared at the house.
She hadn’t been there for six weeks.
Her mother had died earlier that year, and Emily had been struggling to deal with everything that followed.
But she still had a key.
Or at least she thought she did.
Then the front door opened.
A man Emily had never seen before stepped onto the porch.
“Can I help you?”
Emily froze.
“This is my mother’s house.”
The man looked confused.
“I think you might have the wrong address.”
“No.”
Emily glanced at the number beside the door.
“I’m definitely at the right house.”
The man hesitated.
“We bought this place three weeks ago.”
Emily felt her stomach drop.
“What do you mean you bought it?”
