Something Didn’t Add Up

Emily began going through old documents.

Bank statements.

Tax notices.

Insurance papers.

Anything she could find.

She didn’t know exactly what she was looking for.

She only knew Rachel’s explanation felt incomplete.

Two days later, Emily contacted the attorney who had helped their mother prepare some documents several years earlier.

He couldn’t immediately discuss everything with her.

But he did confirm one important detail.

There had been a will.

Emily sat up straighter.

“A will?”

“Yes.”

“Rachel told me there wasn’t one.”

The attorney paused.

“I think you and your sister need to speak.”

Emily’s heart began pounding.

“Was the house in it?”

“I can’t discuss the details over the phone until I verify a few things.”

That was enough.

Rachel hadn’t just failed to tell her about the sale.

She had also failed to tell her there was a will.

Emily called her again.

This time Rachel didn’t answer at all.
