A Neighbor Kept Putting Her Trash Bins in Front of His Driveway—So One Morning He Moved Them Into Her Yard
When Eric Dawson bought his house in a quiet suburban neighborhood outside Charlotte, he expected the usual neighbor problems.
Dogs barking.
Lawn equipment early on Saturday mornings.
Maybe an argument about a fence someday.
He did not expect a six-month dispute over two trash bins.
The problem started with his next-door neighbor, Melissa.
Melissa lived in the corner house beside Eric.
Because of the way the street curved, the curb directly in front of her property was shorter than Eric’s.
On trash day, she often placed her garbage and recycling bins several feet down the curb.
Technically, that area was closer to Eric’s house.
At first, he didn’t care.
Then the bins started getting closer to his driveway.
At First, Eric Said Nothing
Every Thursday morning, Eric left for work around 7:15.
One morning, he backed out and noticed Melissa’s recycling bin sitting close to the right side of his driveway.
He had enough room.
So he ignored it.
The next week, both bins were there.
Again, he could still get out.
A month later, one bin was partly blocking the opening.
Eric got out of his truck and rolled it a few feet away.
That evening, Melissa knocked on his door.
“Did you move my trash can?”
Eric answered honestly.
“Yeah. It was blocking part of my driveway.”
Melissa looked surprised.
“The truck needs room to grab it.”
“I understand. But I also need room to leave.”
Melissa sighed.
“Okay.”
Eric thought the problem was over.
It wasn’t.
