Then Lauren Texted Her
At 11:17 p.m., Rachel received a message from a number she didn’t recognize.
Lauren:
“I heard tonight went badly. I’m sorry.”
Rachel stared at it.
She almost blocked the number.
Instead she wrote:
“Did you know I didn’t know about the money?”
Three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Appeared again.
Finally:
“Mark said you weren’t comfortable with us talking, so he thought it was better not to involve you.”
Rachel read the message twice.
Then replied:
“That’s not what I asked.”
Lauren answered:
“Yes.”
Rachel’s anger changed.
Because now she understood something.
This wasn’t Mark privately making a questionable decision.
He had actively created a secret that involved his ex-girlfriend and his family.
And everyone had agreed Rachel didn’t need to know.
But Lauren Had Another Version of the Story
The next message surprised her.
“For what it’s worth, I told Mark he should tell you.”
Rachel didn’t know whether to believe her.
Lauren continued:
“I offered to sign something saying I’d repay it. He said it wasn’t necessary.”
Rachel screenshotted everything.
Then Lauren wrote:
“I’m not trying to interfere in your marriage. I was desperate and he offered.”
That mattered.
Because Rachel had spent most of the evening imagining Lauren asking Mark for money.
Now she wasn’t sure that was what happened.
Rachel asked:
“Who suggested the first payment?”
Long pause.
Lauren answered:
“Mark.”
