Then Her Husband Disappeared
While Mason continued investigating, the husband suddenly disappeared.
Police later found his car near an airport.
Inside the vehicle, officers discovered a suitcase.
A woman’s wedding ring sat inside it.
However, the ring didn’t belong to the missing woman.
That discovery raised even more questions.
Mason ordered investigators to examine the husband’s financial records.
Soon, they found something disturbing.
The records showed payments to seven different women.
Some of those women had disappeared.
At that point, Mason realized he might not be investigating one missing woman.
He could be looking at a much larger pattern.
Then the Phone Rang
Later, Mason received an unexpected call.
The missing woman was on the other end.
She was alive.
Her first words shocked him.
“My husband didn’t make me disappear.”
Mason froze.
Then she added:
“I did.”
She explained that she had disappeared because she knew she was in danger.
However, she revealed something even more disturbing.
Someone inside the police department was working with her husband.
That person had been feeding him information about the investigation.
Suddenly, Mason couldn’t assume that every police officer around him was trustworthy.
Every move the department made could reach the people they were investigating.
