Half the Family Took Sides Before Dinner Even Started

By 2:30, almost everyone knew.

Some relatives thought Diane was completely out of line.

Others thought Rachel should let it go.

Eric’s aunt whispered:

“Diane’s always been particular about Thanksgiving.”

Rachel heard her.

That somehow made it worse.

As if everyone already knew Diane behaved this way.

They had just decided it was easier to let her.

One cousin told Rachel quietly:

“You know how she is.”

Rachel responded:

“Yes. That’s exactly the problem.”

Then Diane Said the One Thing She Couldn’t Take Back

Dinner was delayed.

Rachel was in the kitchen trying to salvage what remained.

Diane stood near the dining room talking to Eric.

She didn’t realize Rachel could hear her.

Diane said:

“I don’t know why she insists on changing everything.”

Eric lowered his voice.

“Mom.”

“For thirty years, you’ve eaten Thanksgiving the same way.”

“Things change.”

Diane sighed.

“Since you married her, everything has to be different.”

Rachel stopped moving.

Then Diane said:

“Sometimes I feel like she wants to erase our family and replace it with hers.”

Rachel stepped into the room.

“Is that what you think?”

Diane turned.

Nobody spoke.

Rachel asked again.

“Do you really think me cooking Thanksgiving dinner in my own house is erasing your family?”

Diane looked embarrassed.

But instead of apologizing, she said:

“You wouldn’t understand. You don’t have a son.”

That was it.

Rachel put the dish she was carrying down.
