Then Their Mother Explained the Difference

Linda finally said what she had apparently believed for years.

Kayla had always been responsible.

Tyler hadn’t.

Kayla finished college.

Tyler dropped out.

Kayla kept jobs.

Tyler struggled.

Kayla saved money.

Tyler spent it.

So their parents treated them differently.

Their mother explained:

“Kayla, when you need something, I know you’ll figure it out.”

Kayla stared at her.

“And Tyler?”

“He needs more help.”

There it was.

The family rule Kayla had never realized existed.

The responsible child got less help because she needed less help.

The irresponsible child got more help because he needed more help.

Kayla asked:

“So my reward for doing everything right is that you charge me rent and use it to help him?”

Her mother responded:

“That’s not a fair way to describe it.”

Tyler quietly said:

“It kind of is.”

That Was When the Argument Changed

Kayla expected Tyler to defend their parents.

Instead, he looked embarrassed.

“I didn’t know.”

She believed him.

Tyler turned toward his father.

“If I knew this came from her paying rent, I wouldn’t have taken it.”

Their father responded:

“You needed transportation.”

“I could’ve bought something cheaper.”

“You need a reliable truck for construction.”

Tyler shook his head.

“I don’t even have steady construction work right now.”

Their father became irritated.

“That’s exactly why we’re helping you.”

Tyler answered:

“And maybe that’s why I keep screwing up.”

The room went quiet.
