Chapter 16 – The Open File
The case remained open.
There was never a public moment when everyone learned exactly what happened.
No dramatic courtroom confession.
No relative suddenly told the whole truth.
No final message arrived proving Sara had escaped.
And no verified evidence emerged that allowed the people who loved her to pretend everything was fine.
Her family continued insisting she had chosen to leave Italy.
Women’s advocates continued asking why nobody outside the family had been allowed to speak privately with her.
Murat continued saying the media had destroyed their reputation.
Cemal stopped speaking to reporters altogether.
Leyla still used the same profile photograph on her phone.
It showed Sara at seventeen.
Before Matteo.
Before Emre.
Before police stations and shelters and voice messages.
Mother and daughter were standing beside a birthday cake.
Sara was smiling.
Months later, a journalist asked Leyla one question outside a supermarket.
“If Sara walked through that door tomorrow and said she wanted nothing to do with the family, would you accept it?”
Leyla stopped.
She looked genuinely hurt.
“That would never happen.”
“Why?”
“Because she loves us.”
The journalist waited.
“That wasn’t the question.”
Leyla’s face hardened.
“She loves us.”
Then she walked away.
She never answered.
And somewhere in an open case file was the last independently verified sentence Sara had spoken before disappearing from public view:
“Don’t make things worse.”
Nobody knew anymore whether it had been a request.
A warning.
Or something she had been taught to say.
