Chapter 4 – The Pattern

One incident meant nothing.

Anna understood that.

Rescue work was chaotic.

Money mattered.

Transport mattered.

Clinics were busy.

People made imperfect decisions.

Then came Luna.

A white cat with a severe skin condition.

Then Nino.

An elderly spaniel found extremely underweight.

Then a litter of kittens with respiratory infections.

Each time, Anna noticed the same strange rhythm.

Animal arrives.

Photos first.

Short video.

Donation post.

Second video several hours later.

Then treatment.

Not always.

But often enough that Anna began noticing.

One Saturday she asked another volunteer, Marco:

“Do they always film before the vet?”

Marco shrugged.

“Pretty much.”

“Why?”

“Because if the animal comes back cleaned up and treated, people don’t react the same.”

Anna stared at him.

Marco seemed to realise what he’d said.

“I don’t mean that in a bad way.”

“What way do you mean it?”

“People donate when they understand urgency.”

“They can understand urgency from medical information.”

Marco laughed.

“You’ve never run social media.”

“No.”

“Exactly.”

He carried a bag of food toward the storage room.

Anna followed.

“So the worse they look, the more money?”

Marco stopped walking.

“Don’t say it like that.”

“Like what?”

“You’re making it sound disgusting.”

Anna looked at him.

He lowered his voice.

“The money still helps animals.”

That sentence would appear again.

Many times.
