Chapter 7 – The Animal That Disappeared from the Page

Anna started documenting.

Not publicly.

Not yet.

She saved dates.

Posts.

Donation totals visible on campaigns.

Veterinary invoices Marco could legally access as part of his administrative role.

Messages about delaying updates.

Nothing proved physical abuse.

But it suggested something Anna found almost as disturbing:

The rescue seemed to need animals to remain visibly desperate for as long as possible.

Then there was Pippo.

A small terrier.

Haven Paws posted a photograph showing him curled in a cage.

The caption said:

He has stopped trusting humans.

Donations poured in.

Anna contacted a vet technician she knew at the clinic.

“Did you see Pippo?”

“Yes.”

“How bad is he?”

“What do you mean?”

“The rescue says he’s barely responsive.”

The technician paused.

“He was nervous.”

“That’s all?”

“He ate from my hand.”

Anna said nothing.

“Why?”

“Nothing.”

That evening, Haven Paws posted:

Tonight he refused food again.

Anna stared at the screen.

Then at the message from the technician.

He ate from my hand.

For the first time, she felt angry rather than suspicious.
