Carol Took Much Longer

For weeks, she insisted she had only been protecting both sons.

She couldn’t understand why Megan viewed it as such a betrayal.

Then Josh asked:

“What if Megan’s mother went through your purse because she thought something inside belonged to Megan?”

Carol immediately said:

“That is completely different.”

Josh replied:

“No. It’s uncomfortable for the same reason.”

Carol went quiet.

The Apology Came Three Months Later

Carol invited Megan for coffee.

Megan expected another argument.

Instead, Carol said:

“I was wrong.”

Megan waited.

Carol continued:

“I thought because we paid for part of the wedding, I still had some authority over what happened that day.”

Megan nodded.

“You didn’t.”

“I know that now.”

Then Carol said something more difficult.

“I also still think of Josh’s money as partly family money.”

Megan looked at her.

“And that’s going to be a problem.”

Carol actually smiled a little.

“Yes.”

“At least we’re clear.”
