The Folder Wasn’t Where It Used to Be
Sophie went upstairs to the small cabinet where Eleanor’s documents had been kept after her death.
The folder was gone.
She searched another drawer.
Nothing.
Then her father appeared at the doorway.
“What are you looking for?”
“The account paperwork.”
“You don’t need it.”
Sophie turned around.
“Why not?”
“Because we’re already trying to fix this.”
“Then give me the paperwork.”
“Sophie.”
“Dad.”
Neither moved.
Finally, Mark said:
“Your mother has it somewhere.”
That answer made Sophie even more suspicious.
She left.
The next morning, she called the law office whose name she vaguely remembered seeing on her grandmother’s documents.
She didn’t expect much.
Instead, the receptionist asked for her full name.
Then:
“Ms. Miller, one of our attorneys has actually been trying to reach you.”
Sophie sat straight up.
“What?”
