Grandma’s Lawyer Had Been Waiting for Her

Two days later, Sophie sat across from an attorney named David Kaplan.

He placed a file on the table.

“Your grandmother was very particular.”

Sophie almost smiled.

“That sounds like her.”

David explained that Eleanor had created more than just the savings account Sophie remembered.

She had also left written instructions regarding the educational funds.

The exact legal structure wasn’t as simple as Sophie had assumed.

Some money had been placed in an account her parents could access for qualified expenses while Sophie was still a minor.

But Eleanor had required records to be kept.

And there was another provision.

At eighteen, Sophie was supposed to receive an accounting of every withdrawal.

She never had.

David looked at her.

“Did your parents provide you with those records?”

“No.”

“Did you authorize them to use the money for your brother’s wedding?”

“No.”

David nodded.

“Then we have a problem.”
