Then Madison Said the Sentence That Stopped the Party
Claire asked:
“How do you know my husband?”
Madison looked at Evan.
He shook his head.
Almost pleading.
Madison ignored him.
“We’ve been together since November.”
Claire felt Jenna grab her elbow.
Not because Claire was falling.
Because Jenna knew exactly what Claire was about to do.
Claire stepped toward Evan.
“November?”
Their baby had been conceived in January.
Evan said:
“Claire, please.”
Madison interrupted.
“And before you ask…”
She placed one hand over her stomach.
“I’m twenty-one weeks pregnant.”
No one spoke.
Claire stared at Evan.
“Is it yours?”
Evan didn’t answer.
Madison did.
“Yes.”
Claire Hit Evan Across the Face
It happened quickly.
One sharp slap.
Then silence.
Evan stepped back in shock.
Claire’s sister immediately moved between them.
“Claire.”
Claire was shaking.
Evan touched his cheek.
“What the hell?”
Claire looked at him.
“You got another woman pregnant while I was pregnant.”
Evan lowered his voice.
“This isn’t helping.”
That sentence nearly caused a second explosion.
Jenna pointed at him.
“Do not tell her how to react right now.”
