Then Evan Tried to Take Claire’s Phone

Claire unlocked her phone.

“Give me your phone.”

Evan replied:

“No.”

“Then I’m calling Dad. I’m leaving.”

Evan stepped closer.

“Claire, don’t make this bigger than it already is.”

Claire laughed in disbelief.

“Bigger?”

She started dialing.

Evan reached toward her phone.

Claire jerked it away.

“Don’t touch my phone.”

He reached again.

Jenna shoved his arm aside.

“Back off.”

Evan turned toward her.

“Stay out of this.”

Jenna answered:

“You brought your pregnant girlfriend to my sister’s baby shower. I’m already in it.”

Madison Tried to Leave

Madison turned toward the gate.

Claire called after her.

“Wait.”

Madison stopped.

Claire asked:

“Did you know I was pregnant?”

Madison looked uncomfortable.

“Not at first.”

Claire’s heart sank.

“At first?”

Madison nodded.

“I found out about two months ago.”

Claire stared at her.

“And you stayed?”

Madison said nothing.

That changed the crowd immediately.

Until that point, several people had looked almost sympathetic toward Madison.

Now they weren’t so sure.

Claire asked:

“So you knew he had a pregnant wife.”

Madison answered:

“He said you were only still living together because of the baby.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Which baby?”
